RL Tips: A Modern Rustic Living Room

Neutrals, clean shapes, and natural wood will complete this living room look

Rustic furniture originated in the mid- 1800s. It was influenced by the early 19th-century financial depression in the West. Because of the economic slide, furniture makers used whatever available materials there were, like twigs and larger branches, for production of furniture. A famous example of this type of piece is the Vienna Chair designed by a German- Austrian cabinet maker Michael Thonet. Today, rustic furniture incorporates unpolished metal to the natural wood finish for a more updated look.

How to achieve the look:

Take note of:

  • The key colors: neutrals.
  • The key materials: wood and other organic trappings like fallen twigs and native fibers.

Piececs in streamlined silhouettes mixed with a handful of other items in solid colors – like this red floor lamp – make for a no- fuss style.

Soften the sleekness with plush furnishings, such as pillows and a throw in interesting geometric prints.

A few pots of greens and a cowhide rug can instantly inject coziness.

If you want to veer away from a masculine look, go for pillows in floral or dainty prints.
