Q: Due to a recent flood, my husband and I transferred to a mid-rise residential building. This is a 360-degree turnaround for us because the space is very limited compared to our previous house, which was very traditional. Can you give us tips on how we can maximize space? — Con T. Jorge
A: A smaller space will make you realize that you may not need so many things anymore. Because space is limited, it is important that you start purging your belongings to avoid bringing unnecessary items into your new home.
Once pared down, take a good look at your space and find a place for each item. Look past the floor space—walls can hold floating shelves, or a TV on a wall bracket. Got high ceilings? You can have extra storage built in for off-season pieces like Christmas décor. Staircases are great for shoe cabinets or extra drawers. A narrow space next to cabinetry can be used for brooms and mops, or a pantry.
