Saved by Japan.

When you’re at the mall doing grocery (or perhaps doing a last-minute Christmas shopping?), squeeze in a few minutes to drop by a Japanese home store (try Saizen at Robinsons Galleria and TriNoma in Quezon City, or at Glorietta 3 in Makati City). Grab a couple of cute Christmas décor available (make sure to get items that are of the same color scheme and of varying heights), then group together three or four of them on your TV console or coffee table to create a vignette.

Organic touch.

If you have a fallen twig just lying idly in your backyard (because you have no time to get rid of it yet), repurpose it as your makeshift Christmas tree. Leave it out to dry for a few hours before cleaning it with a paintbrush. Then, place it on a vase and hang old Christmas balls on its branches. Voila! Rustic holiday tree in no time!

Bunting break.

All you need are a string (about five feet long) and some art paper sheets in green and red. Make a bunting (see for instructions) that you can hang by your window or your wall. You may also have your kids spell out “Merry Christmas” on each triangle piece of the bunting.

Extra cheer.

You know those excess Christmas wrappings bound for the trash bin? Save them and make a collage of excess wrappers that you can frame and display in your home.

Bring greens in.

It’s typical to see shrubs and hedges decorated in twinkling lights. But if you don’t have the luxury of space for such a Christmas-y garden, why not garb that potted plant sitting in the corner of your home with Christmas lights? Just remember to water it carefully, making sure to avoid the wires and any accidents.
