DIY: Summer-themed Door Mat

Add a colorful twist to your plain door mat

Welcome guests into your home with the bright and cheerful vibe of summer! Update a plain outdoor mat and turn it into a vibrant décor piece for your space.

Let the steps below guide you.

DIY Inspired by All photos from

  • Plain outdoor mat
  • Your chosen colors of textile paint
  • Duct tape
  • Sponge
  • Paintbrush
  • Use duct tape to cover the areas that won't be painted. Do this according to your design. You may want to consider having vertical, horizontal, or even chevron stripes!
  • Once you've finalized the pattern, start painting the uncovered areas using a paintbrush or sponge brush.

RL Tip: Make sure that your outdoor mat is suitable for textile paint. If your rug is made of plastic, you can use spray paint for a better finish.

  • Let it dry outdoors.
  • Once dry, peel off the duct tape and display by your door.
