DIY: How To Update An Old Clock

Give it a much-needed facelift

Original Article: Arlene Sy Photography: Vincent Coscolluela

Tired of that old, plain clock that you look at every morning? Make telling the time more fun by making your clock look quirky and playful. Here’s how:

  • A standard wall clock
  • Wrapping paper or patterned wallpaper scraps
  • Illustration board or hard paper stock
  • X-acto knife or scissors
  • Numbers and design cutouts
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Glue Glue gun or heavy-duty double-sided tape

1. Disassemble the clock using the screwdriver. Then, set aside the body of the clock and the glass cover.

2. Trace the shape of the inner rim of the clock on the reverse side of your patterned paper. Do the same on the center of the illustration board.

3. Cut out the circle that you drew on the patterned paper. And at the center, create a home that is big enough to accommodate the mechanism of the clock. Then, draw a line from the hole to the edge of the circle, so the paper can slide under the hands of the clock.

4. Position the numbers and design cutouts on the new face (the round shape you cut out from the patterned paper). Then, slide the new clock face over the old one. If it doesn’t fit snugly, secure using tape or glue.

5. Reassemble the clock.

6. On the illustration board, draw a line on the middle that will separate the circle into two halves. Draw the shape you want on the edge of one half of the circle.

7. Fold it and trace the design on the other half. You now have two symmetrical halves.

8. Attach this shape to the border of the clock using glue gun or double-sided tape. Then, create a “pendulum” by cutting out more shapes on the leftover cardboard.

9. Once you're done, use your quirky clock to liven up a blank wall at home.
