Myth No. 4: Always fill up empty spaces.

“My mentor Budji Layug taught me to just put nothing if it’s not the right piece,” says John, adding “…you are better off with a great dining table with no accessories on top, instead of putting the wrong accessories.” In other words, if it doesn’t work, don’t force it. You must choose basic pieces that look good, though, to begin with.

“A dining table with a solid wood top that has nice grains will look good alone.” Moreover, an open, uncluttered space is always attractive, and you don’t have to fill up all the walls. “Pick an accent wall to highlight your collection of decorative items. Put the essentials first and then accessorize. If it isn’t working, take it out.”
