The “Ber” months signal the beginning of the mad rush to buy gifts, and snap up holiday décor. But don’t you long for the days when Christmas decorations were simple, affordable, and had more meaning than the plastic ornaments you find in stores?

Create your own avant garde holiday decorations at home, using objects you probably already have lying around. Here’s how to make them.

Magical Branches.

Fill a small pot or vase with floral foam, then wrap the whole lot in a few sheets of aluminum foil, set aside. Pick some fallen tree branches from your garden, spray paint silver or gold. When the paint is dry, stick the branches into your pot, and dress it up with strands of beads.

TIP: This fantastic “wallpaper” here is a DIY trick too—just tear out pages of an old book, and apply carefully onto the wall using wallpaper glue.

Sparkling Centerpiece.

Take a circular fruit bowl from your kitchen. Using a box cutter, carefully cut out a piece of floral foam to fit inside the bowl. Cover the foam with aluminum foil. Insert tree ornament crystals and silver-painted twigs and reeds into the foam to form a “spray.”

Paper Tannenbaum.

This ornament is by far, the cheapest to make! From old newspapers, make several honeycomb-style folded trees in different sizes. (For how-tos on how to make a basic honeycomb ornament, click here) Elevate your trees using shot glasses, or hang them from the ceiling with filament wire.

Twine & Crystal Tree.

Insert a bamboo stick (cut to size) into the middle of floral foam tucked into a narrow vase. Cut a few barbeque sticks in half and tuck them around the side of the floral foam. Create a tree form by tying one end of the twine on both sides of the barbeque stick, and thread all the way up and secure at the top of the bamboo stick. Decorate with crystal drops.
