What's not to love about the Shabby chic style? A lot are instantly enamored with its charm—a result of a combination of pastel colors, rustic details, and a few distressed pieces. Aside from giving your home a punch of personality and warmth, it also allows you to be creative when it comes to choosing furniture and accessories. If you want to get started on working with a Shabby chic state of mind, here are ideas found in some of the homes we love:

1. Let your distressed furniture finds shine.

When it comes to this style—the more distressed, the better. In this living area, the owner showcased these customized chairs with distressed finishes from Lucina Home. As an alternative, you can also visit different secondhand shops for pieces you can use. You can also get started with coffee tables and side tables with the said finishes to keep up with your home's theme.

2. Upcycle and recycle.

Notice anything interesting and quirky in the photo? The owners transformed an old computer table into a dining table then turned an old sewing table into a console table that separates the living and dining areas.

To breathe new life into these old pieces, the owners simply painted it in colors that match the overall palette of the home. For an authentic vintage feel, you may choose not to paint your pieces perfectly. A few chips here and there would look more unique and interesting.

3. Play with pastels.

The easiest way to transform your home into a Shabby chic-inspired haven would be to paint it in sweet and dainty colors. Light blue, pink, and yellow can brighten up your space and give it a homey feel. Pair these colors with printed pillow covers, curtains, and even lace table runners to complete the look.

RL Tip: Make it extra special by showcasing decor from thrift shops! Go eclectic—mix and match pieces from different styles, bring in potted plants, and throw in small wooden knickknacks, too.

4. Opt for a printed sofa.

While a plain, neutral sofa can get the job done just as well, a printed sofa can add a touch of quirk to your Shabby chic-inspired home. Choose a sofa depending on the color of your walls. In this living area, the blue accent wall works well with the printed seating piece. To balance it out, most of the pieces are kept in neutral with wooden finishes.

5. Work with sheer white curtains.

Make your home extra airy and bright by working with sheer white curtains. These are perfect options if you're playing with pastel colors on the walls and furniture. It also provides just the right amount of privacy while still letting light stream into the space.

RL Tip: Keep an all-white space from being too boring by working with wooden pieces. In this home, most of the pieces feature a raw, wooden finish—giving it a rustic, welcoming vibe.

6. Don't forget the little, interesting details.

To create an illusion of a bigger dining space, the designer of this unit created a faux window using a wall mirror and a couple of wooden screens. These wooden screens (you can get your own when you drop by Wilcon Depot!) are versatile must-haves that you can use around the home. Aside from framing a mirror, it can also be transformed into a headboard or even as an organizer! Keep the color as is or you can paint it white, light blue, or cream.
