5 Ways To Decorate With Polka Dots

This design staple is worthy of a spot in your home!

When picking out prints to incorporate into home decor, polka dots aren't exactly the top-of-mind choice—we don't think of it as sophisticated and elegant, but instead we see it as something that should be left in hair bows, retro skirts and preschool backpacks.

However, that's not always the case. When styled the right way, it can add a fresh and playful touch to any space while maintaining a classic aesthetic. If you're interested in experimenting with this charming pattern, here are some ideas you can try:

If you're not into the idea of repainting or rolling out wallpaper, the easiest way to play with this pattern is through a statement area rug. To make sure it stands out, choose a piece that is in contrast with the color scheme of the room—for example, in this home, the rug lends a surprising pop of blue in a spot drenched in warm oranges and browns.

If you want another no-paint option, you can hop on the polka dot bandwagon through bedding. Keep your display from looking over the top by throwing in a few solid-colored pillowcases and thin sheets in the mix.

RL Tip: Contrary to popular belief, pastels pair very well with monochromatic pieces. Try peach, baby blue or millennial pink.

Steer clear of the "blue is for boys, pink is for girls" rule by finding the middle ground—in this case, a combination of teal and gold—for the nursery. Accessorize the room with white pieces to keep the attention on the beautiful walls.

Feeling a little colorful? Don't be afraid to go for rainbow-inspired dots! Not only do these add a one-of-a-kind punch to a space, it saves you the trouble of having to go all out on decor because it can already double as the accent piece.

For a feature wall that is fun but subtle, consider going for just a few, big wall decals. You still get the same child-like charm without making your home feel less grown-up.

RL Tip: To make the look timeless, stick to furniture and accessories in subdued colors and clean silhouettes.
