5 Photos That Will Inspire You To Create a Rustic-Inspired Balcony

Achieve your own personal snug haven

When it comes to sprucing up the balcony, many homeowners have chosen to start a vertical garden for a good number of reasons. It's quite easy to maintain, it gives the home a refreshing vibe, and most of all—it allows you to enjoy the rewards of a calming escape within the city. However, for those who are not yet set on the idea of caring for a few plants may want to explore the possibilities of having a rustic-inspired theme.

While you can always make the balcony extra comfortable with seating pieces and pillows, take it a notch higher by keeping within a theme. The rustic style packs a punch in terms of warmth and aesthetic—that you can easily pull it off and make the most of your limited space. Get started today with these photos as inspiration and a few tips:

1. Go all out with your setup.

Create a unique area complete with a woven or brown rug, a coffee table, and two matching chairs. Inject the rustic feel into the space by adding wooden wall accents, potted plants, and neutral-colored furnishings. If there's a door leading to the balcony, you may want to paint it in a lovely pastel shade or go bold and give it a distressed finish.

2. Turn it into a whimsical wonderland.

You've probably read it a hundred times before—the balcony can also double as an extension of the living area or dining area. On days when you're expecting guests at home, you can host a wine and cheese night with a view of the city. To transform your balcony, you can have a wooden folding table and a set of stackable stools. Place your table in the middle and liven it up with a burlap table runner and mason jars filled with votive candles.

RL Tip: Want to make it a get-together to remember? Fill jars with twigs or even hang string lights! These elements help set the mood and make the balcony even cozier.

3. Work with upcycled pieces and rattan furniture.

Can't seem to decide on the layout and final look of your balcony? Start by investing in accessories. Well-thought-out items—whether big or small can add charm and character to your space. Drop by garage sales and flea markets for a table you can repurpose and even rattan chairs that you can liven up with throws and pillows. Fix these items in one corner and you'll have a reading corner in no time.

You may also want to dedicate a space beside it for another table that can hold decor and other essentials—use it to store your gardening tools if you have a vertical garden in the balcony.

4. Upcycle wooden pallets.

Have you seen those wooden pallets in the market or your favorite secondhand shop? Get a few of those and turn it into a comfy bench that can fit in your balcony. You may need help from a carpenter to secure your piece but if you want to do it on your own, simple stack the pieces according to your desired height, add a cushion on top, and complete it with throws and pillows.

5. Start with storage.

If you're working with a tight budget, you can use wooden crates as storage. Touches of wood paired with mason jars as accent pieces can complete the rustic vibe of your balcony while keeping it clutter-free. Simply stack two or three pieces and you're good to go. Remember not to fill it with heavy items to keep it from toppling over.
