5 Ideas For A Chic Home Office

It doesn’t have to look like a conventional office

Everyone can work almost anywhere—whether it’s in a hip coffee shop or at home. When working at home, you don’t have to make your home office look like a corporate office. Make it cozy and stylish with these tips from interior designer Van Acuna-Solana:

1. Paint your wall a refreshing color.

You can skip the neutrals and go for a hue that’s cool to the eye. Van used a light shade of teal in sprucing up this small home office, complemented by white ceiling and mouldings. It is also neutral enough for both the male and female users of this space.

2. Go for open shelves.

Cabinets might make this small space look cramped. By using open shelves, Van was able to add storage without adding visual heft. Books and accessories mingle in the shelves, making interesting vignettes.

3. Add a banquette.

If you’re lucky to have a bay window in your home office, add its perfect match: a banquette. Not only does it add seating, but it can serve as storage, too. Van did just that by putting cabinets under the banquette built in this home office.

4. Put a multipurpose couch.

Should you have clients over, let them sit on a comfortable sofa. Van used a comfy sofa bed for this home office to accommodate one of the occupants’ parents when they come over. You can even use this sofa bed to steal some naps when you’re pulling an all-nighter.

5. Have a clean and organized desk.

The beauty of the whole space will be useless if you have a disorganized desk. Put magnetic boards or corkboards for your notes and reminders. Organize your pens, and keep away unsightly piles of documents.
