5 Easy Bedroom Updates

Transform your private space into an even more cozy and relaxing sanctuary with these ideas

After a long day at work, we all look forward to a good night’s sleep. How can you enjoy this luxury if your room is cluttered and in disarray? While you can instantly cozy up your personal space, you may also consider simple updates that won't hurt your pocket.

Interior designer Peaches de Guzman-Grey shares that for bedroom interiors, the essentials are as follows – a bed for sleeping and relaxing, bedside tables where you can place your knickknacks and essentials, a writing desk for work, and closet for storage. “These items correspond to different functions. Some of us might feel guilty to do work on the bed or put knickknacks on the first surface that we see. Before upgrading your bedroom, you must consider its function first.”

Peaches shares these ideas that you may want to consider once you’re ready to give your space an upgrade.

Make the bed your focal point.

The first thing that you see when you enter the bedroom is the bed so you can make it your focal point. You may choose to hang an interesting piece of art, a photo, or a DIY mural above your headboard.

If you have an extra budget, you can paint the area behind your bed with a different color or choose to install a wallpaper instead. This creates an illusion of an oversized headboard. While you can experiment with the colors and design, keep in mind that whatever you choose to put or paint there must go well with the overall look of your room.

Choose coordinated beddings.

The colors and patterns of your pillows, sheets, duvets, and flat sheets should match the other elements in your bedroom such as the walls, curtains, and rug, to name a few. “When your room is organized, it helps you feel peaceful. Too much pattern and color keep your mind busy, making it harder for you to rest,” shares Peaches.

Opt for a small side table lamp.

A smaller lamp serves the same function but gives you more extra space on the side table where you can place essentials such as an alarm clock and a couple of décor pieces.

Turn your closet into an accent piece.

If you’re not yet ready to paint your walls or add stencil patterns, you may choose to do muted murals on the doors of your cabinets and closets. You can also change your cabinet pulls into pieces with character. There are so many designs to choose from – just visit the nearest local hardware store to check out options.

De-clutter regularly.

“Sometimes, you don’t really need a major makeover. All you need to do is fix your room and de-clutter,” Peaches says. Simply cleaning your room and keeping your things organized can help keep your room relaxing. Check your things weekly and see which ones you need to keep and which items you need to throw away ASAP. Keep small items organized by adding a nice tray on your vanity or side table.

RL Tips:

Look for horizontal lines in your bedroom such as blinds, patterns, shelves, and décor. Horizontal lines evoke a tranquil vibe – making your room feel more relaxed.
