5 Budget-Friendly Tips for a Home Makeover

Interior designer Michelle Dumlao - Pastoral shares interesting ideas on how to have a makeover for less

Everyday, the Real Living team receives questions from readers on how they can get free home makeovers. While we are preparing for our next Ultimate Makeover contest, we have asked interior designer Michelle Dumlao-Pastoral to reveal ways on how you can change your home on a budget.

Do your research

Before anything else, choose the style that you want for your home. Check design books, magazines, and websites to find the looks, furniture pieces, and accessories that could fit your theme, budget, and lifestyle. Don't get carried away and buy furniture pieces and accessories right away.

Also, if you live in a condo, make sure building administration knows about your plansthey may be able to provide you with important information.

Repaint your home

Paint has a big effect on the look of your space! For an instant makeover, you can choose a new color for an accent wall or the whole room. Before you start, make sure you have enough information first. For example, check the wall (is it concrete, wood, gypsum, etc.?) and find the right type of paint for it.

Reupholster or repaint old pieces

Instead of buying furniture pieces, reupholster existing furniture pieces that are still in good condition. For a fun look, you can try fabric with fun patterns from Kamuning and Divisoria.

You can also repaint or apply varnish on old wooden items. You can also use spray paint for metal furniture and accessories.

Visit secondhand shops and thrift stores

To furnish your home, find secondhand furniture at Evangelista St., Bangkal, Makati. It can be exciting for you to find ways to refurbish, update or personalize the old pieces. You can also paint, reupholster, stain, and varnish these pre-loved items.

Great home decor can also make your space look even better. For nice accessories at cheaper prices, you can visit Dapitan Arcade.

Dapitan Arcade is located on Kanlaon St, Santa Mesa Heights, Quezon City, Metro Manila.

Turn it into a bonding activity

To make your makeover fun (and to save on labor costs!), ask for help from your family and friends. Just think of all the memories you can make together when you paint walls, scour secondhand shops, and choose accessories.
