4 Ways To Work With Mismatched Chairs

It's time to make perfect dining sets a thing of the past

Some people say that purposely mismatching furniture is a science, and not an art. When done right, a space can become an eclectic paradise while on the other hand, a few mistakes can easily make your home look like a worn-down thrift shop.

While there is no exact formula to achieving this decor style, you can still recreate the look with one simple technique: having a unifying element that will bring the room together. To inspire you, we've come up with four unique design ideas and a few tips on how you can make it work:

Mix traditional and modern pieces together.

Similar to adding an accent chair to a streamlined living room, you can incorporate contemporary seating in a classic dining area to create dramatic contrast. Consider going for pieces with clean lines and rich colors to keep the overall look sleek.

Pick a theme for the upholstery.

For those who are planning on experimenting with fabric, it's best to stick with a motif to tie the look together. For example, if you want to go for florals, you can choose a textile with varying pattern sizes and colors to pull the look together.

RL Tip: This tip works two ways—you can take a matching set and use different fabrics or get mismatched chairs then unify it with the same print.

Play with neutrals.

If you are not a big fan of color but you still want to achieve an eclectic aesthetic, you can do so by keeping your palette neutral and being more adventurous with silhouettes. Monochrome pieces in different materials like rattan, wood, and metals look amazing when mixed together.

Buy the same chairs in complementary colors.

The easiest way to pull off the mismatched look is to get identical chairs in distinct colors. When the shapes and materials are consistent, it is much easier to take risks with one-of-a-kind shades.

RL Tip: Make sure to get two of each chair to create a perfectly balanced set.
