Furnishing a new or recently renovated home is always an exciting chapter. While you’d love to splurge on luxe pieces or fill the space with furniture and accessories in one go, you need to take into consideration the budget you’re working with.

Remember, it’s better to take your time than buy things in bulk. This allows you to plan your purchases and create a more streamlined look for your space. Interior designer and Real Living editorial assistant Paula de Guzman shares these additional tips:

1. Buy the basics first.

Big-ticket items like the sofa, bed, and dining set must be prioritized. “Without these pieces, it will be hard to go about your daily activities at home,” Paula says.

2. Purchase new bed linen and pillows.

No need to visit different stores to find the items you need as department stores carry a lot of affordable yet stylish options. You also need to allocate a part of your budget for brand new appliances for safety purposes.

3. Use found objects as accessories.

Why spend a couple of thousands on decorative pieces when you can simply head out and look for quirky items you can upcycle? “Old bottles with the label peeled off can double as vases or storage for little baubles,” Paula says. In addition, you can also gather a few twigs, have it cleaned, and displayed using glass jars for a rustic-inspired centerpiece.

4. Triple check the secondhand items you buy.

Are you fond of garage sales or do you love visiting thrift stores? While these stops can help you save on cash, it’s still important that you check the pieces you’re eyeing. “The item should be sturdy, has good bones, is free from scratches, and has no loose knobs, among other things,” the designer explains.
