When designing our homes, the climate should be one of the major factors that we must consider. Since our climate is often hot and humid, it's best to create a space that's suitable to the tropics. We would want a home that's airy, spacious, and cozy.

If you're considering a tropical vibe for your own home, here are tips and ideas to guide you.

Pick earth colors

“Earth colors are mostly used in a tropical design. You can combine it with bold colors to create an accent,” shares interior designer Gretchen Ronquillo. If you live in a small space, opt for a beige or chocolate brown sectional sofa then pair it with vibrant throw pillows to create visual contrast.

Install wide windows

Wide window openings are trademarks of a tropical home. Aside from allowing more natural light in, these windows can also let the breeze through to make the house a bit cooler without air conditioning.

Opt for a monochrome color scheme

A monochrome scheme means working with just one color in dark and light shades. This will work well in small living areas as it can give an illusion of a bigger space. Create a unified look by picking a coffee table and sofa in similar shades.

Decorate with plants

With our country’s tropical climate, it’s much easier for you to choose and take care of plants. Architect Vince Martin Pinpin suggests using bamboo hedges, violet Ti plants, or gabi plants to give the home a unique and natural feel.
