In cities where space is a luxury, a roof deck is like a surprise "present" when found in a home. Penthouse units or condo units in a terraced building are usually lucky to have roof decks. If you happen to have one, make the most of it by turning it into a functional space. Here are some ideas to consider:

1. Urban garden 

Create your own city oasis with a potted garden; small trees are also welcome, as long as they fit in the service elevator. Make sure you have proper drainage (and a faucet) in the area for when you water the plants.

2. An additional "room" 

Condo units have limited floor areas, and a roof deck is a wonderful opportunity to create an extra "room," be it a sitting or lounging area—maybe even an al fresco dining space. Just remember to use weatherproof furniture and accessories to protect your things from different elements.

3. A smoker's lounge and bar 

Do you enjoy a good party and regularly host them at home? Add a few cocktail tables and chairs, a weatherproof bar (Don't forget to keep it stocked!), maybe a few ashtrays and your home will surely be your friends' favorite hangout spot.

4. An observatory

Place a couple of telescopes and a sitting area, then you're ready to view the night sky (among other things). This is going to be the perfect spot for enjoying a nightcap, too! 


5. Reading nook 

If you're willing to invest a little extra cash, you can have a canopy (or any covering of your choice!) over it to turn it into your personal library. Keep it cozy with a lot pillows and a fuzzy blanket.
