When it comes to furnishing our home, we usually encounter challenges—how can you fit your dining set in a limited space? Is it still possible to restore old furniture?

We received three questions involving furniture and household eyesores and to help you, we asked two interior designers for expert tips. Be guided by their suggestions below:

How can I restore wooden furniture that has white patches?

“Most people would suggest stripping off the existing varnish and having the door refined. But I also read somewhere that more heat and moisture can actually do the trick and solve the problem.

All you need are: two to three linen napkins, a spray bottle with water, and a steam iron/steamer. Place the folded napkins (these should have several layers) above the affected area and dampen them with water. Next, iron over the napkins and keep the iron in a medium/steam setting. Keep ironing for 15 seconds or so, and the marks should disappear in a while.” – Interior designer Vera Villarosa

Where can I get louvered doors and plantation shutters in Metro Manila?

“Louvered doors and plantation shutters are usually custom wood carpentry works by contractors. You may inquire from suppliers of trim work (baseboards, cornices, etc) and wood panel doors located at bigger depots if they also have louvered doors and plantation shutters. Pacific Timber Export Corporation have services for custom wood doors, visit for more information.” – Interior designer Kimi Manuel

How can I hide a switchbox in the dining area?

“Aside from a painting or a framed décor, you may also use a tapestry on the wall to cover the switch box. This lessens the chances of accidents from fallen frames every time you need to access the switchbox. A closed armoire or tall cabinet can also be placed in front of the switchbox so that you may have a concealed access to it.” — Interior designer Kimi Manuel
