Give the smallest room in the house a much needed upgrade

The powder room is often used by guests and family members. It may be the smallest room in the house - but it still deserves an upgrade. Let these budget-friendly ideas inspire you to spruce up your private space.

1. Follow a theme.

Since it doesn't have a bathing area, you can be adventurous. Some themes that you may want to consider include: spa, dainty Victorian, ultra-modern, or a contemporary, artsy Filipino theme - like this powder room. Remember that your décor should tie in with that of the rest of the house.

2. Add a fresh coat of paint.

To save on time and money, you can always repaint the plain cement wall above the tiles if you want a new look.

3. Always keep it clean.

Keep your powder room spotless. Wipe up water spills and don't forget to replenish toilet paper and towels.

4. Add an interesting work of art.

If your powder room is well ventilated, showcase a dramatic piece of art—this will instantly become a point of interest. Just make sure to remove the painting every time the powder room is being cleaned to protect it from moisture.

5. Prepare a hotel-like pampering setup.

You may use the bath sets, soaps, and free samples of lotions and perfume in your powder room. You may arrange the items in a tray for the hotel-like feel.

6. Create an illusion of bigger space.

Placing a large rug in the middle of your powder room will make the room look smaller. You may opt to place a series of smaller rugs instead.

7. Segregate the trash.

Have a green powder room by adding two trash bins for biodegradable and non- biodegradable wastes, or even simply paper and plastic. Line them with brown bags.

8. Add foliage.

Live plants and flowers can give your powder room a fresh look. Choose plants that thrive in wet areas.

9. Add an elegant touch.

A Pinoy bathroom wouldn't be complete without a dipper or tabo. Instead of hanging it on a hook or leaving it on the floor, you may raise it on a pretty pedestal like an oriental ceramic elephant or a ceramic stool.

10. Use a nice rack.

Avoid placing a lot of things on the powder room floor as this will eat up space. Hang them on the wall instead. Magazines can be placed on a storage rack meant for holding cling wrap or aluminum foil.

11. Arrange towels on a tray or basket.

Instead of providing just one hand towel for everyone to use, provide several guest towels that are carefully arranged on a tray or basket. You may also provide a little hamper for the used ones. Place a single towel in it to let people know what it is for.

12. Use scented candles.

If you like scented candles, match the scent with the season of the year or whatever occasion you are celebrating. Visit your favorite home store or drop by Body Shop to check out home fragrance oils.
