Decorating a small space is no easy feat, but you can do it without overspending or changing the entire look of your home. By simply adding the right accessories or knowing what to highlight—you can give your space an upgrade and improve its ambiance. To inspire you to get started, here are some ideas we loved from our featured homes:

1. Use bricks for your accent wall

If you're not sold on the idea of having a brick wall, you can still incorporate it into your home by opting for an accent wall. Black bricks can give your space an edge while complementing the look you have in mind. In this unit, the owners agreed to an accent wall that works well with the neutral colors of the walls and furniture.

2. Install quirky storage

Why settle for ordinary shelves when you can have one that'll captivate guests and serve as a statement piece, too? Since storage is very important in a small home, invest in a shelf that can moonlight as an art piece. Choose one with fun lines or a unique structure that will allow you to experiment with how you'll display decor or books.

Find a similar shelf at Crate & Barrel, SM Makati.

3. Make a statement in the dining area

Add a touch of elegance to a tiny dining nook with a lovely centerpiece and a framed wall art. In this dining area, a tall glass vase filled with faux flowers livens up the table while adding depth to the space. Aside from a vase of flowers, you can also work with potted plants and candles in different heights.

4. Choose an accent color

An accent color doesn't have to be used on a wall or even when it comes to choosing furniture. Small doses—in accessories and furnishings—can also make an impact. Take your cue from this charming condo unit dominated by neutrals. To keep it from being boring, interior designer Van Acuna-Solana worked with pops of yellow. Since it is injected through pillows, decor, and lighting pieces—a cohesive look is achieved without drowning the space in the bright color.

5. Do chalkboard art

If you love working on DIY projects, you can work with chalkboard art when sprucing up plain walls or corners. Purchase illustration boards and see how you can install it on your wall. Once the board is set, you can doodle, draw, or write lists. Those who are willing to turn a wall into a canvas can paint it with chalkboard paint, too.

Find chalkboard paint at True Value or Robinsons Handyman.

6. Display a themed vignette

It's so easy to create a vignette using the things you love or even a couple of plants. To create a lasting impression while showcasing your favorite accessories, you can work on a themed display. Whether you love Paris or the beach, collect knickknacks that symbolize it or remind you of it—use these as the stars of your vignette. Play around with wall art, framed decor, and tiny decor pieces.

7. Choose a wall art that goes well with your chosen wall finish

While it's fun to curate a gallery wall, you can keep things simple with a lone piece of wall art. In this unit, the designer chose a framed work showcasing New York's skyline to complement the cement wall. This combo completes the urban-industrial appeal of the space. As an alternative, you can also work with an abstract painting or a family portrait that will surely personalize the area.

8. Don't forget the entryway

Does your home have a theme? Make it known the moment guests step into the space. In this beach-inspired unit, the owners carved out a makeshift entryway by placing a cabinet by the door. The space on top holds a catchall of seashells, knickknacks in blue, and a jar of cold iced tea. After all, the beach is all about relaxing and a enjoying a refreshing respite, right?

9. Mix and match pieces to maximize every inch of space

Instead of working with an ordinary side table, see if you can fit a work table beside your bed. Not only will it serve as storage, it can double as workstation, too! Simply add a stool and you're all set.

10. Explore other ways to bring nature into your home

Brighten up the tiniest of nooks with potted plants and indoor plants that can purify the air in your space. If certain factors make it difficult for you to tend to a few plants or if you don't have a balcony, you can still make it happen with faux plants or an accent wall with faux greens, similar to what interior designer Vera Villarosa-Orila did in her unit.

Find faux greens at Divisoria, Wilcon Depot, or SM Home.
