RL Tips: Designing Small Spaces

Ace the layout of your condo unit

Designing small spaces like a studio unit can be challenging. Given that you only have 20 to 27sqm to work with, you can only do so much. However, with proper space planning and an ideal design palette, you can live comfortably and make the most of your home. Interior Designer Rochelle Granali shares her tips for small space living.

Take note of these design basics:

1. Choose an open layout.

“First off, opt for an open plan in the lay-out,” advises Rochelle. “A bookshelf, cabinet or workstation can be used as partition instead of walls. These are better since having a full partition can block off the limited light on the unit.”

2. Choose proper lighting.

A small space often looks more dinky if it’s lit poorly. If you don’t have generous windows, you have to depend on both ambient and general lighting. “You should provide a proper amount of lighting to the unit, especially to the kitchen and dining area.”

3. Go for bright, pale walls.

Lastly, resist the urge to paint your walls in dark colors. “Cool, light works better in small spaces.” The designer adds.
