Do a color switch

Go for cooler hues like blues and greens -- you can also try pastels! Stay away from reds and other hot colors like bright orange and yellow.

Lighten up

Replace your slipcovers, throw pillow covers and curtains with soft-hued pieces made from lighter fabrics.

Try an open door (and window) policy

If safety isn’t an issue, open your doors and windows to allow air to circulate around your home. Keeping them shut will only make your home feel stuffy and warm.

Bring the green in

Buy small indoor plants and scatter them around your home. Plants naturally cool down a room, and visually enhance the space.

Be fruitful

Use fruits as a fresh tabletop centerpiece. They will add color to your home and leave a sweet, fruity scent.

Turn the tables

Update your table settings with woven placemats and accessories made out of natural materials like sinamay and dried grass. You can also choose bright, sunny colors!

All in the wrist

On a hot day, nothing beats washing your wrists and your other pulse pints for that matter under cold running water.

Try a DIY cooling mist

Make a homemade cooling herbal spritz you can leave out on the terrace. Seed a cucumber, slice it finely, and add to one cup of water. Let stand. Strain into spray bottles.

Assemble a weather survival kit

Assemble a hot weather survival kit—fill it with hats, sunglasses, sunblock, fans, and refillable water bottles. Leave it by the door so your family and guests can “protect” themselves before heading out.
