LOOK: 7 Alternatives To Subway Tiles

Give ordinary tiles a rest! Try these unusual tile shapes to spice up your walls or floors.

Subway tiles have once been considered the Holy Grail of ceramic tiles (it was hard to find it locally a few years back), but these tiles are now as ubiquitous as the next coffee shop. This isn’t a bad thing, because the standard subway shape fits quite well in most interiors.

But if you’re looking for a surface finish that is a bit more unexpected, then try a new shape. Hexagonal, Moroccan-style, and even rhombus-shaped interchangeable tiles could add more depth, dimension, and color to a flat surface.

Here are some cool and funky tile shapes to consider. Just don’t forget to show your tile-layer what the finished product will look like, lest he gets the shock of his life when he opens the box.

Arabesque Tiles

The delightful curves of Arabesque tiles are so exotic, and they have that retro-70s feel, especially in a mustard color like this. Cifre Yello Antique Tile, P138.60, Wilcon Depot

Hexagonal Tiles

Hexagonal tiles cover more surface area than the standard square-shaped tile, plus they form beautiful geometric patterns. Serie Marrakech Patterned Tiles, prices upon request, iTrade; Niro Granite Tile, price upon request, AllHome

Rhombus Tiles

These versatile rhombus-shaped tiles allow the designer to create dynamic, almost-3D-like effects using different variations of patterns, surface textures, and colors. Serie Rhombus, prices available upon request, iTrade

Hexagonal Subway Tiles

This is a simple and easy alternative to the standard subway tile, if you still like that hipster look. Can be used on floors, too. Serie Kite Tiles, prices upon request, iTrade

Mixed-shapes Tile

This charming little beauty looks like a mini-Spanish-tile mosaic, but is actually just a single tile. Try it in a country kitchen. 30x30 Tile, P126, Wilcon Depot

Accent Tile

This wild tile works best in small doses. Use it as an accent tile to break up a plain, white expanse of herringbone-patterned subway tiles. Colored Accent Tile, P126, Wilcon Depot

Long Subway Tiles

Lay these super-long subway tiles in a herringbone pattern for a weave-like effect, or lay them vertically to add height to the room. Abe Grupo Serie Sotile Tiles, prices upon request, iTrade
