6 More Gates With Style And Security

Create a safe yet stylish haven with these contemporary gate ideas

When one thinks of security and gates, two things often come to mind: applying barbed wire and installing pointed bars. Though these materials may offer you peace of mind, these particular gate treatments often look aggressive and dated (and sometimes, they don’t even deter the robbers!).

A well-made gate and sturdy fence with properly located openings would suffice, and when equipped with motion sensors and CCTV cameras, they become even more secure. So don’t shun style when you put up your gate—after all, it’s the first thing your guests would see. Here are some ideas.

Senator Manny Pacquiao’s home’s exterior in General Santos City combines a horizontal wood-and-iron gate with slatted bars combined with concrete fencing. A landscaped corner of shrubs and trees serve as an attractive “screen” for additional privacy.

Light and airy

Wide-spaced, horizontal wrought iron bars on the gate and fence give beauty queen and TV host Venus Raj’s Camarines Sur home security, but in a light and dainty way.

Play of patterns and materials

In the home that actress Pauleen Luna lived in prior to marrying Vic Sotto, a fence of concrete and slate rock cladding gives seems impenetrable, but the gate’s warm materials and geometric patterns add visual interest.

Folding gate

For a Singaporean house, Arch. Michael Cu Fua of ONG&ONG used a main gate that folds out and then in when opening—a great idea if your home’s lot has a small footprint and if you have a tight driveway.

You won’t miss Arch. Gil Castillo's home because of its bright yellow-and-gray-painted concrete fence juxtaposed against a simple, traditional provincial gate.

Metal and polycarbonate

This Makati home’s metal and reinforced-polycarbonate gate gives the façade and fence a clean, sleek look and allows natural light into the covered garage. The translucent quality of the polycarb, however, will prevent strangers from peering in.
