6 Cool Alternatives To Beige And White

Are washed-out whites your colors of choice for the home? Add a bit of fun into your life with these six picks that are unexpected but still neutral-friendly.

The knee-jerk reaction of most new homeowners is to paint their home all-white, or all-beige. These classic neutrals are beautiful—no doubt about that—and go with any color or decorating style. But there is a whole range of "new neutrals" out there that you should consider; as these hues and materials can add depth and texture to your interiors.

Medium Gray

A soft, heather gray is a safe alternative to beige—it adds depth to the space, and complements warm accents like red, orange, and yellow nicely. This living room by Wilmer Lopez pairs warm gray walls with cool gray furnishings perfectly.

Black is a dramatic choice for paint, but it is also considered a neutral, and goes with all colors. A black wall also makes a nice contrast to white furniture. Is going black too drastic for you? Try a small accent wall first in your foyer, or at the long end of your living room.

A brick finish can go in opposite directions: industrial and raw, or country and sweet. But either way, brick adds warmth and texture to walls and spaces, and sets off wooden furniture beautifully.

Unpainted concrete walls are a nice, raw finish for urban interiors. Concrete is technically gray, so it has the same qualities of the tint—cool, calming, and sophisticated. Decorator Gwyn Guanzon offsets the grittiness of his concrete walls by using playful patterns and refined furniture.

Light Green

Celery, sage, mint, and other light variations of the color green are a more refreshing alternative to white. Green also makes a lovely backdrop to tropical furniture.

Wood Veneer

Want to be enveloped in warmth? Clad your walls entirely in wood veneer, as what designer Pam Tan did. The veneer gives a certain mid-century flavor to a room, and goes well with other warm colors like orange, russet, and brown.
