Choosing a home makeover or renovation project for your own home entails many decisions and factors to consider. You need to keep in mind a couple of basic and practical rules when it comes to renovating your space. Design professionals give these tips to help you get started and make your project successful:

Plan your renovation accordingly

Never face a battle unprepared. “It is important that you have drawing plans, time frame, and budget plans so you won’t get overwhelmed especially at the later phase,” says interior designer Vivian Gacad. These essentials give your makeover direction and help you set boundaries.

Don’t sacrifice quality

Design consultant Grace Moslares warns homeowners of sacrificing quality of materials due to a tight budget. “This would normally apply when renovating toilets and baths. The fittings may seem very expensive at first, but all of this may come out cheaper than what you think because they should certainly last,” says Grace.

Avoid DIY if you’re not sure

“DIY projects should be done only if you are capable of executing them. Otherwise, you will end up hiring someone to fix it for you—which may cost you more in the end,” says Grace.

Have a contingency plan

“Aside from costs, don’t forget to plan for contingencies in schedules or time frames in case of unavoidable delays,” shares interior designer Hannah Acab-Faustino.

It's best to work with professionals

”Renovations [involve a lot of things] like carpentry, electrical and plumbing works. Hiring a reputable contractor or designer can help you maximize your budget as well as interpret your ideas into executable plans,” says Grace.
