5 IKEA Hacks To Try Using Furniture You Already Have

These transformations are almost too good to be true

There is no denying that decorating and putting together design pegs for your home can be a lot of fun. In a perfect world, we'd be able to pick out any designer piece we want and have it delivered right to our doorstep. However, the reality is different—if you want an authentic mid-century table for your dining area, you have to be prepared to shell out a huge amount of money.

Don't worry, this doesn't mean you can't get the look for a lot less. The secret? Shopping for basics at IKEA or any affordable home store and the willingness to go the DIY route. Here are some ideas you can try:

Why settle for plain and boring storage if you can have something that doubles as a statement piece? If you have a couple of similar cabinets like these Ivar units, stack them together side by side (or one on top of the other, depending on the orientation) and paint it over with a design of your choosing.

RL Tip: If you don't feel like trying your hand at painting, you can cover it up with graphic wallpaper instead.

If you need an instant reading nook-slash-toy chest for your kids' bedroom, the Kallax shelves (or any generic cubbyholes) are your best bet. All you need to do is lay it flat in one corner, place a block of thin wood or foam on top for seating, style with a few pillows and you're done!

While a raw, wood dresser works for minimalist-inspired spaces, it can't hurt to turn it into a more glamorous piece for a design-forward home. All you need are pieces of interesting hardware, some accessories and eye-catching paint to achieve this look.

If you think your wall clock is looking a little lackluster, adding a belt over it as a hanging mechanism can give it a much-needed upgrade. It's the perfect statement piece for a rustic-industrial space or a country-inspired room, too!

Looking for a way to give your vanity extra oomph? A little fur over your stool goes a long way. Start by spray painting the legs of the chair, then cut the fabric around the size of the seat before attaching it to the surface. Don't forget to cut away any excess material for a high-end look.
