Aside from teaching us to be more resourceful when it comes to finding pieces that fit, small space living also encourages us to practice our creativity. From finding ways to spruce up a corner to separating areas without breaking the aesthetic of the home—we’ve truly come a long way. Whether you’ve recently acquired a new space or planning to purchase one, we’re sure that you’re faced with the dilemma of how to ensure privacy while still maximizing the available floor space and keeping the vibe light and airy.

To help you get started, we’ve collated five pegs and ideas from some of our favorite small spaces. Save this page and use it as reference when it’s time to work on your haven:

1. Sheer White Curtains

The easiest way to keep the airy and spacious vibe would be to have an open layout. In this beach-inspired home, stylist Julienne Cruz opted for sheer white curtains and a slim curtain rod to separate the bedroom from the rest of the unit. Aside from maintaining the theme, it also adds a calming feel to the sleeping space.

2. Kitchen Counter/Dining Nook

Many would think that it's quite difficult to carve out nooks within a 22sqm space. With the sleeping/living area taking up most of the space, the team behind TKSL Interior Design worked with a counter that serves as dining nook, storage, and extra kitchen counter in one to separate the cooking area from the living spaces. Since it's open and features neutral colors, the unit doesn't end up looking small and cramped.

3. Wooden Sliding Doors

Who would have thought that it's possible to still have a guest bedroom/TV room in a 48sqm unit? One of our readers opted to have a wooden sliding door to separate her cozy TV room from the rest of her fall-inspired home. Since it has a comfy couch, it can double as an extra bedroom as well. To keep the bright and airy look, the door is kept open during daytime to allow sunlight to stream into the space.

4. Folding Doors

If you're looking for an alternative to sliding doors, you can opt for folding doors! When not in use, it takes up less floor space and can help you keep the layout open. Depending on the style or feel you have in mind, you can paint it or choose a wooden finish for a rustic vibe. We especially loved how the yellow doors in this unit brighten up the space and balance out the industrial details.

RL Tip: For PVC versions with a wooden finish, you can visit CW Home Depot and Wilcon Depot. The door seen in the photo is a custom-made piece from a sash factory. There are various factories along the Silang-Tagaytay road you can check out.

5. Sliding Glass Doors

For those who can't get enough of the Industrial theme can work with a sliding glass partition similar to what interior designer Ruby Besira did in this 43sqm halfway home. The glass allows light to pass through even if the doors are closed—keeping the unit bright and inviting. Those who are wary about privacy can install additional sheer white curtains—especially if you have guests around the home.
