Getting through all that paperwork of purchasing new property is one thing, but it is also an equally challenging task to maintain it! To ensure that you enjoy your hard-earned home for years to come, architect Celine Sy-Changco shares these preventive measures. After all, planning for now means less troubles in the future.

Invest in quality construction

If you’re planning on building a house from scratch, hire a good architect and an experienced contractor. Always follow construction details and specifications, and choose materials known for their quality (not necessarily imported ones), especially for electrical wirings and plumbing materials.

Do regular maintenance checks

“Common house problems include plumbing issues such as leaks and clogs, roof leaks, molds and mildew, cracks in concrete, pests, and electrical problems that, in time, can do bigger damage to your homes if left unchecked,” says Celine. Hence, schedule home maintenance checks regularly. Preventive measures ensure that whatever happens, your home will be able to withstand it.

Consult the pros

Costly mistakes can decrease the value of your home in the long run. You might think you’re saving money, but in reality, you’re jeopardizing the structural integrity of your house if you don’t consult with proper professionals. “Whether you’re adding a new room or installing wires for additional electrical load, you should have a plan that you can show the engineer, architect, or plumber who can interpret the scope of work,” says Celine.
