101: How To Manage a Small Space Renovation

Maintain privacy during the construction period

Choosing to renovate the home entails a lot of adjustments aside from dealing with a lot of factors like budget, working with professionals, and choosing the right materials.

One of the most important questions to ask would be: where would you stay during the construction period? You're lucky if you have an extra room to spare, but what if you only have a limited space? RL Reader Erik is going through this process and would like to ask for helpful tips! We asked interior designer Peaches de Guzman-Grey for reminders and here are things to keep in mind:

Plan everything ahead

Just like any other endeavor, it would be beneficial if you've planned the renovation months in advance. Aside from listing down the materials needed, you must also finalize the timeline of the project. As a designer, Peaches usually proposes a "phasing" of the things to be done. When working on a major renovation, the first to be worked on is the living area followed by the bathroom then the bedroom. Given these phases, activities won't be sabay-sabay—giving you privacy and allowing you to move around the home.

RL Tip: Don't forget to discuss the timeline that you have in mind for the project with the design professional. Be open about schedules so that he or she can make the necessary adjustments to ensure a successful renovation.

Consider staying in a temporary space

If your space is too small, you may want to stay in an Airbnb or rented apartment for a couple of days. Rent a space near your home so you can drop by from time to time to check on the progress of the renovation. To save on costs, you may also want to stay with your parents or at a friend's house.
