Q: I would like to ask if you know where to buy subway tiles here in the Philippines? I want to use them as backsplash for my kitchen. — Sheril Tan via Facebook

A: Those small, rectangular white tiles arranged in a staggered brick pattern are called subway tiles because they were widely used in the New York subway system back in the early 1900s. You can buy regular white tiles instead and just have them cut to size. Most shops will cut tiles for a minimum cost.

You can also can get subway tiles at Rockstone, CW Home Depot Ortigas, 1 Julia Vargas Ave., Pasig City.
