Find decorating tips inspired by this design consultant's haven

Many homeowners (especially empty nesters and retired professionals!) are thinking about giving up their big houses and moving into smaller spaces. After all, a smaller space is more affordable for buyers and renters and can also be easier to furnish, decorate, and clean.

Design consultant Grace Moslares is one of the many who chose a more modest home. She and her family recently opted for an 80sqm house in Antipolo. Their new two-storey haven is now filled with antique pieces, colorful touches, and unexpected details.

If you are planning to move into a different place or you simply want to create a better home, you may want to consider these ideas we learned from the design consultant's dwelling:

Spruce up antique furniture

Start by updating an ornate mirror and console table with an unconventional color! If you think that red may be too strong, you may want to consider white, baby pink, or pale yellow.

If you look closely at this particular console table, you would see the hand-decoupaged floral details by interior decorator (and former Real Living creative director) Gwyn Guanzon.

Display your kids' artworks

Instead of simply placing your children's drawings on your refrigerator door, you may want to put them in frames. You can hang up the framed artworks on the dining area wall.

For example, for this particular space, Grace displayed the work of her son Paolo. He worked with Grace's best friend Mai Ongkiko and used various materials like silk-screen and poster color

Paint the outlet covers

You may also want to create a unique space by painting your light switch and electrical socket covers. Turn off the electricity in your home and place masking tape over the socket holes and the areas surrounding the covers. Once this is done, you can simply spray paint the covers.

Use bright accent pieces

Are you afraid of bold colors and vibrant shades? You can bring in color with a table lamp or an accent chair in bright purple, emerald green, or even tomato red.

Opt for wall-mounted shelves

If your bedroom looks too plain and boring, you may want to look for an upholstered headboard, framed artworks, or a handful of shelves.

For this particular bedroom, Grace picked wall-mounted shelves that can be used to store and display their personal belongings. For a pop of unexpected color, she also paired the work and study table with two yellow Panton chairs.
