5 Ideas to Steal from a Young Couple's 180sqm Home

Discover how you can make the most of an old place and hand-me-down pieces

For every homeowner that can afford to buy a brand new home and fill it with fresh-off-the-floor furniture pieces, there are 10 more that live in an old space furnished with pre-owned items. However, this doesn't have to be a bad thing! For one, this is usually a more affordable choice, especially for newly married couples, small families, and other people on tight budgets. More importantly, properties and possessions that have been around for a while have more charm and character.

Homeowners Sarah and Dennis Tirona also had to live in an old place filled with antique pieces from their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Here are the 5 things that we can learn from the young couple's 180sqm home:

Reinvent old furniture pieces

According to Sarah, the dining table used to be the table where she and her relatives would have breakfast together. She painted the piece black for a sleek and modern look.

Behind the dining table is a wall mirror, buffet table, and two Igorot lamps from Sarah's great-grandmother's house. The wall mirror and buffet table were painted white, while the lighting fixtures were painted green.

Paint laminated cabinets

Since the cabinets were too expensive to replace, the homeowners decided to simply paint over the laminated surfaces.

The couple spent the money that they saved on brand new subway tiles and granite countertops.

Spend wisely

Instead of buying one expensive piece, you may want to purchase more items for the same amount of money. For example, the homeowner originally bought a leather couch from Our Home for the living room. However, since her grandmother wanted her to replace the sofa, she eventually settled on a black reproduction Egg chair, a white coffee table, and two white chairs.

Stick to a black-and-white palette

The first thing that we noticed about the master bedroom is the black-and-white color scheme. The monochromatic theme helped turn the plain area into a cool and stylish haven.

Don't be afraid of quirky choices

Do you want to breathe new life into an old piece? The homeowner transformed a dark brown rattan peacock headboard and side table with Tiffany blue paint. She also paired it with interesting touches like a dreamcatcher, a string of paper lanterns, and a few colorful pillows.
