Homeowner Kai Cruz turned her childhood home into a modern contemporary space that she can share with her husband Cyrus and their daughter Taylor. She complemented the high ceiling and huge windows with affordable furniture pieces from HMR and Mandaue Foam. Surprisingly enough, she only spent P250,000 on the renovation, furniture, appliances, and even their little garden.

Here are some of the things that we learned from this renovated family home:

Start with a neutral-colored piece

You can start by choosing the big furniture pieces in neutral hues and earth colors. Doing this would help you create a classic and timeless space that you can easily update through the years.

For example, you can pick a sofa in brown, blue, or gray. You can simply spruce it up with colorful throws and pillows. You can also pair it with an accent chair or side table with a bright color.

Transform an empty space

Another thing that we learned from this particular home? You can turn a bare corner into a useful nook! For example, you can use the space underneath the stairs as a reading nook or a home office. You may also want to create a pocket garden with hanging wall planters.

Don't be afraid to mix things up

The homeowners furnished the dining area with a wooden dining table purchased for only P6,000 at Mandaue Foam. For an eclectic look, it is surrounded with plastic dining chairs.

Use unexpected pieces

The daughter's bedroom is filled with surprising finds — Kai's own childhood bed and a red table and chair from Gingersnaps, a local clothing brand for children.

You may also want to use old items from your childhood home and interesting picks from garage sales and secondhand stores.

Use a wooden crate as a side table

For a rustic and charming feel, the homeowners turned a wooden crate into a side table. A small accent chair or a filing cabinet can also serve as a side table. Look around your own space for unused pieces that you can upcycle and reuse.
