5 Ideas to Steal from a Modern Tropical House

Discover decorating tips and tricks inspired by this family home

How can you build a house on an uneven terrain? Architect Kathleen Henares and contractor Fidel Henares worked with the natural curve of the lot! They chose slanted walls and opted to have a few small and narrow rooms. They complemented the modern design of the three-storey house with tropical Filipino furniture and accessories.

If you would like to have a few design ideas for your home today or in the future, here are five things that you can learn from this family home:

Opt for neutral-colored pieces

Still looking for furniture pieces for your living area? We may have said this a few times already but it still rings true: stick to neutral-hued finds! Cream, beige, or taupe sofas and armchairs have a classic and timeless appeal.

RL Tip: If you think that light-colored seats are dumihin, you may want to choose gray or blue pieces.

Look for a wooden dining set

Many homeowners have fallen in love with fully upholstered dining chairs! Although these pieces may seem elegant and sophisticated, these may not be ideal for a modern tropical house. For a more relaxed and laid-back feel, you can choose a wooden dining set.

Create an informal dining area

If you have extra space in your lanai or kitchen, you may want to invest in another dining set. You can use this for everyday meals with your family and friends.

Use a wooden panel as your headboard

The homeowners spotted this intricately carved panel on a trip to Baguio. This wooden piece now serves as a unique headboard in their master bedroom.

RL Tip: Instead of a wooden panel, you may want to hang up something that holds special meaning to the two of you. If you love traveling, you can frame an oversized world map and hang it on the wall.

Look for a different pedestal

If you are still building or renovating your home, you may want to think about using different counters for your bathroom! Instead of a traditional bathroom pedestal, you may want to use a wooden table or a recycled sewing table.
