Determine the function of the room
What is the main use of the room? Will it be a room for watching TV or for tending the kids? Once you've finalized its function, it would be easier for your to arrange the pieces accordingly.
Observe natural traffic paths
The traffic in your home is often dictated by the location of your doors. Make sure that the furniture pieces do not block the traffic path. In a small space, it is often recommended to place big pieces of furniture against the walls in order to clear the main path for traffic.
Remove some pieces
You have to accept that some existing furniture can’t work well with your new arrangement. Do not just discard this piece. You can place it another room to serve a similar or another function. For example, a side table can be placed in the kids' room as storage.
Find your outlets
Existing electrical outlets, cables and telephone jacks will also determine where your pieces go. Always locate the appliance closest to the outlets to avoid a cluttered space.
