Q: There’s a small area in my house I wish to look like the houses in Southern France. Please give me pointers on how to pull off a French-inspired space. — Nicole M. Bacolod

A: The colors and textures of southern France has inspired the local residents to create understated yet charming homes. You can bring the same charm to your home by following these basics:

  1. Use a relaxing color palette, which includes light but warm natural colors like yellows, creamspastel blues and greens.
  2. Indoor areas should flow naturally towards your garden.
  3. Fill your home with handmade and one-of-a-kind antique fabrics and accessories like ornamental clocks and decorative plates.
  4. Don't choose heavy furniture! Stick with light, rustic pieces that have a vintage appeal.
