A limited floor space shouldn't stop you from having a relaxing and practical balcony or lanai. With a few changes and updates, a plain outdoor space can be transformed into a lovely nook that's perfect for gatherings and some quiet time.

Let these four easy-to-do ideas guide you:

Create a vertical garden

The limited space should motivate us to make the most of every inch of space. If you want to showcase plants, you can maximize the available space by trying your hand at vertical gardening. This is ideal for small spaces as it allows you to spruce up an empty wall while adding a refreshing touch to your home.

Opt for movable and multipurpose furniture

Invest in quality furniture pieces that you can transport from one area to another. Some examples include trolleys—especially if you love entertaining guests at home. Use it to hold plates and drinks during parties. Ottomans are also ideal as seating options as these do not take up too much space and can also moonlight as extra storage solutions.

If you cannot fit an extra coffee table in the space, you may opt to have a foldable table that you can easily store when not in use.

Choose weatherproof furniture

The weather can be unpredictable these days so it's best to also invest in weatherproof furniture. “Choose weatherproof furniture pieces that can stand the heat as well as the rain. Pick furniture made from abaca, plastic or wrought iron pieces,” shares design consultant Grace Moslares. If your lanai or balcony is a covered area, you can work with stylish pieces that can add a unique cozy vibe to your space.

Work with a theme

Your balcony or lanai should reflect your personality or follow the overall look of your home. Whether you're working with an eclectic or tropical theme, keep in mind that you need to achieve a cohesive look. Your furniture, decor, and furnishings should at least have one common element to complete the look.
