RL Tips: Maximizing Your Shelves

Make your shelves neat and chic with these organizing tricks

Shelves are musts in any home. An organizing staple, they can hold almost anything—from books to knickknacks to various houseware items.

Design consultant Elle Uy shares this tip—"Shelves are for things that you like or need to see often. Keep in mind that these things are always on display, so making them neat is key."

Keep in mind these organizing tricks:

  1. You may consider having freestanding shelves. These pieces are available in leading home stores, or you can hire your friendly neighborhood carpenter to customize one for you.
  2. When arranging books, group them by subject, by height, or even by color to give your shelf a neater look. Spruce it up by interspersing the books with quirky bookends and tchotchkes.
  3. For tiny condos, wall-mounted shelves are ideal if you want to save on floor space. You can opt for easy-to-install ones that can be readily bought, or let your carpenter make one for you.
