RL Ideas: Storage Solutions for the Home

When it comes to organizing your space, think of something more than the usual

Every household has its share of clutter. Some people live with manageable mess, but many of us have far too many things in our homes.

If you live in fear of getting hit on the head every time you open an overflowing cabinet or spend an hour every day looking for your wallet, here are a few ideas that you may want to consider:

Staircase Storage

In choosing storage solutions, think of customized, built-in options, just like interior designer Joy Ejercito. Instead of buying another cabinet, Joy added drawers and cubbyholes to the steps of her home office staircase. Inspired by Japanese kaidan-dansu or step-chests, the staircase steps keep her design plans in place.

Fancy Shelves

Instead of simply storing your things, think of ways to display them beautifully. In this Makati home, interior designer Anna Leah Hernandez adorned one wall with gently curving bookshelves. Aside from keeping your reading material within reach, it adds a touch of whimsy to the space, too.

Books on Steps

If you can’t beat them, join them – or in this case, if you can’t hide them, show them off. If you’re running out of room for your books and other belongings, keep them in unusual places. In the home of editor Jo-Ann Marcelo, she and her husband Ding keep their reading materials on their staircase steps.

Be Creative

Follow the lead of homeowner Dr. Rommel Caballes and start using old cabinets for different purposes. In his 82sqm condo in Mandaluyong, Rommel used four antique filing cabinets to store all of his shoes.

To make the cabinets look more interesting, he added tassels on the handles.
