Hide it.

Disguise a worn-out sofa and cover up everyday stains with a velvety throw. Improve the impression with layers of soft, graphic pillows. You may do this on an unmade bed, too. Simply throw a fluffy comforter over it.

If you don't have a throw, take a thick blanket and fold it lengthwise, then in half, and then tuck it into the cushions for an effortlessly polished look.

Use trays.

A small tray can help you organize small items and provide an elegant way to present your trinkets. Arrange the articles by placing the tallest ones at the back and the small ones in front.

You may also place little bowls all over the house to serve as catch-alls. For more ideas, check out:

You may use trays to organize the items found in the bathroom. Place it on top of your sink countertop or water closet.

Create a mini-garden.

Make a natural distraction and divert your guests' attention to a mini-garden in one corner of your room. Arrange your house plants by placing different small plants in bell jars and adding visual depth and texture with everyday found objects.

If you don't have a bell jar, improvise! Just recycle an empty glass bottle and turn it upside down.

Do stock piles.

Give purpose to the tons of books and magazines lying around your home. Stack them up against the wall and place an object on top of the piles. Display candles and decorative vases on these makeshift podiums. They may even serve as side tables!

If you don't have enough books to make a tower, turn them into a "coffee table" by creating a landscape of books and décor.
