A bed, aside from being one of most important pieces in the house, is also one of the largest and most significant furnishings you will own. This is why you should always purchase a bed that is the right size for your body and your room—this will definitely make things more comfortable.

Also, knowing what are the standard sizes of mattresses will help you decipher all those mysterious labels on your bed linen's packaging, like "Extra Long Twin," or "Eastern King." This will ensure that you will buy beddings that are a perfect fit.

So end the guessing game, whip out your measuring tape, and check out the list of mattress sizes below (sizes in text below are indicated in both inches and centimeters):

Youth Bed (33 x 66in or 83 x 167cm) and Single/Twin (39 x 75in or 99 x 190cm):

These bed sizes are good for kids to teens, although it would be more practical to get a single-size bed to last them for many years. When two single beds are placed side by side, these could also serve as an alternative to a King-size bed.

King Single (42 x 78in or 106 x 198 cm)

This is smaller than a double bed, but bigger than the standard single bed. This is a good option for restless sleepers who move a lot. Keep in mind though, that sheets of this size might be more difficult to find locally, compared to the standard-size single sheets.

Extra-long Twin (39 x 80in or 99 x 203cm) and Double/Full (54 x 75 to 80in or 137 x 190cm)

A double or a full-sized bed is meant for a single person. Although some couples would use this type of bed, take note only a 27-inch-space would be allocated for each person, which is too small compared to the standard 39-inch-width of a single bed.

Queen (60 x 75 to 80in or 153 x 203cm)

This is a good option for couples who like to cuddle, or if you have a small master bedroom, which cannot accommodate a King-size bed. A queen-size bed is also a good option for guest rooms.

King/Eastern King (76 x 80 in or 198 x 203cm)

This size of mattress or bed is roomy enough for two adults, although you have to make sure it will fit through your house’s doors or hallways (or even elevator, if you live in a condo) before you purchase it.

California King/Western King (72 x 84 inches or 182 x 213 cm)

This is lesser than the width of two single beds put together, although much longer, which is a good mattress choice for tall people. The sheets of this size, though, are also more difficult to find in the local market. Check for the sizes on the linen’s packaging.
