Co-working spaces can now be found anywhere, be it in the busiest CBD or in a residential neighborhood. But with jarring overhead lights, squeaky swivel chairs, corny piped-in music, and the noisy din of too many people, is your regular co-working space starting to feel like just another overcrowded coffee shop?

Grow Space is trying to go against the grain of your usual industrial-themed co-working hub. Located on the quiet side of BGC just a few blocks from Bonifacio High Street, Grow Space is tucked in the mezzanine of South of Market, a residential condominium. It’s a bit of a hunt but it’s worth it—once you go up the stairs and open the glass door, you’re transported to a cozy space kitted out with sofas, lounging areas, and plants—lots of plants.

Marketing manager Kyle Imperio explains their unique concept. “Grow Space was open before, but it looked different. It had a corporate look, [with an] office setup and yellow walls, so were called in to rebrand it. We took its weaknesses and made them into its strengths: mahirap hanapin, but now it’s like a secret, hidden space—a garden oasis in the city.” Co-founder and brand manager Lerizze Dizon adds: “It’s the complete opposite of the hustle and bustle of the city. A lot of people nowadays travel to do some soul searching or to just slow down and appreciate life. We decided to bring that escape one step closer.”

Here’s what to expect at Grow Space:

It feels like a living room…in a garden.

Instead of the usual office tables, Grow Space is filled with cozy living room-type setups of sofas, floor pillows, and wooden or rattan seats. Freelance workers and students are encouraged to lounge on the sofa, or plop down on the floor amidst the potted plants. “We incorporated real plants; it creates a positive vibe, and helps you with your breathing,” says Kyle. Lerizze provides the plants, as she runs the plant business Wild Wonders PH. And since this is on the mezzanine floor, the tops of the trees located outside the condo building can be spotted from the windows, adding to the overall garden vibe.

You can work quietly.

Instead of the usual annoying play lists, the music at Grow Space is soft and subdued, almost resort-like. The “co-workers” are very quiet, and the overall ambiance is peaceful. Lerizze also says that the plants add to this peacefulness. “Plants have a calming effect, spreads positive vibes, and also purifies the air. I wanted people to feel at ease, [to] embrace serenity while still getting things done.”

The space encourages you to think and live mindfully.

“We’re not trying to compete with other co-working spaces,” Kyle points out. “We want to promote meaningful living, and having a good work-life balance.”

You can actually buy some of the plants!

Lerizze fills Grow Space with both succulents and indoor plants, such as selloum, licuala, alocasia Polly, golden pothos, snake plants, cobra ferns, rubber plants and more. You can follow her plant business Wild Wonders PH on Instagram to check out what’s for sale, and pick them up at this co-working space. “We’ll soon have workshops on repotting and plant care,” she says.

It’s quite affordable.

It only costs as low as P90 an hour to work at Grow Space (includes WiFi, power outlet access, and complimentary coffee). A half-day pass costs P250, and a whole-day pass costs P400. It can also be booked for exclusive meetings and small events. You can drop in, but it’s better to call in advance to see if the space is available.

Grow Space is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (they plan to extend the hours soon), and is located at Commercial 30 UG/F South of Market, 25th St. cor. 11th Ave., Bonifacio Global City; call them at mobile 0995-499-5660, email cowork[at]growspace.ph, or follow them on their Facebook page.
