101: Choosing Colors for the Kitchen

Be inspired to cook in a bright and welcoming space

With thousands of shades out in the market, it can be daunting to choose the perfect combo for the home. Especially for a busy area like the kitchen, you need to pick a hue that can make it look airy and spacious so that you can feel inspired to whip up mouthwatering meals and finish tasks efficiently.

RL Reader Bernadette plans to paint the walls in her kitchen. She has chocolate brown countertops and an egg yellow backsplash. What's the perfect color for her walls? We asked interior designer Jeselyn Chuan for some tips. Take note of these helpful ideas that can guide you as well:

Try lighter hues for an airy feel

Generally, a warm color scheme with touches of red, yellow, or orange, is preferred for kitchens because it appeals to our sense of appetite.  Since we don’t know the level of saturation for the egg yellow and chocolate brown colors, it would be best to go for something lighter, yet similar colors to simply make the walls a good backdrop for the cooking area. You may also choose light, white colors like lace, porcelain, or ivory to keep the kitchen clean and spacious.

Use muted neutrals to balance the space

Another option that you can do is to pick muted neutrals like linen, sand, or bone that have hints of brown. Earth colors are usually used to contrast playful materials to create a dramatic vignette.

RL Tip: Go for textured prints in earth colors! Create contrast in your kitchen by adding accessories with prints like chevron or a damask pattern.
