Update Your Family Room in 3 Easy Steps
Transform a spare room into a comfy nook for the whole family to enjoy
On weekends, families get to bond and spend a much needed quality time together. Whether it's gathering in the dining area to enjoy a meal prepared by Mom or staying in the living room to watch a movie or two—we always look forward to this reward after another grueling work and school week!
To take things a notch higher, you can even have a dedicated room for your family bonding activities. If you have a room to spare, turn it into a family room for your movie nights and karaoke sessions. Design consultant Grace Moslares shares these tips:
Work with a carefree color scheme
“A family room needs to have happy colors. Pick relaxing and cheerful shades to make it comfortable for your spouse and your kids,” Grace suggests. If you have white walls, you may choose to paint it with vibrant hues like green or yellow. If these picks are too bold for you, you may opt for neutral colors then pair it with one accent color.
Consider reupholstering furniture
The couch is probably one of the most used furniture pieces at home. If your piece is worn-out, you can have it reupholstered. When choosing the right upholstery fabric, opt for colors like grey, taupe, or mocha as these colors don't get dirty easily.

Add vertical storage
“If you have bare walls, consider placing freestanding shelves to store your things. Dedicate one shelf for your kids’ books or toys, and pick another shelf for your vases and other accessories," shares Grace.
Spruce up the shelf by adding framed prints and potted plants. If heavy enough, these plants can also serve as alternative bookends.
