Unlocking the Story of the Iconic Yale Lock

The world’s favorite lock takes great pride in its history

It began with Linus Yale Sr. and a handmade bank lock shop in the 1840s. Yale Senior was a highly skilled precision mechanic who already held several patents for sawmill and milling equipment. He developed the first model of pin-tumbler lock and built a small lock factory to manufacture them in Newport, USA in 1847.

His son, Linus Yale Junior took over and would eventually become the leading lock expert of his time with a number of groundbreaking inventions. In 1862, he introduced the Monitor Bank Lock, marking the transition from key-based bank locks to dial or combination ones. He also improved upon his father’s pin-tumbler lock design, thus making it suitable for mass-production. This came to what we know now as the cylinder lock, the most widely used type of door lock in the world.

Today, Yale is the brand behind locks of every design and function in over 125 countries. All over the world, people are actively securing their homes or offices with the name they trust the most, Yale.
