Designers and homeowners are constantly searching for that perfect accessory, accent, or shot of color to enliven their interiors.  Recently, I found myself turning to coral to energize my rooms’ color schemes. Coral has the warmth of red, the carefree sense of orange, and the romance of pink.

Coral and its permutations—melon, salmon, flamingo, peach, apricot—I love them all. These hues bring both freshness and warmth at the same time. Very often, red is too harsh, pink too feminine, and orange too playful. But coral is a perfect blend: not too hot, not too cold, just right. And what I love most about the hue is its versatility.

Here are six ways to infuse coral into your home:

1. Coral and pastels

Mixing in coral with pastel tones brings a happy energy for a look that still is serene, and adds depth and warmth. Mint, soft yellows, baby blues, and yes, even pink—coral brings life to them all.

2. Coral and a bold accent

Coral works equally well with stronger colors. Mixed with turquoise (tempered with a backdrop of white), coral brings a fresh zing to this morning room.

3. Coral and naturals

Coral paired with natural textures are another winning combination. In this otherwise neutral space, a sense of playfulness is injected through the subtle coral piping of the banquette sofas, and a single strong bolt of color on the coral armchair.

4. Coral with black-and-white

For a complete different look, adding coral accents to a predominantly black-and-white palette gives a delicious Hollywood-glam feel to any interior. (You can find similar wallpaper at Studio Eleven.)

5. Coral and gray

Coral paired with a light gray is one of my favorite combinations. Light coral curtains set against soft, oyster gray walls is a fresh and elegant look. The coral tint balances out the coolness of the gray tone.

6. Light coral walls with dark coral accents

In this classic living room, the designer used a serene, pale salmon tint for the wall color, which makes the space appear to be flooded with sunlight. Paired with white moldings and soft gray upholstery, the look is crisp and contemporary. The sofa and pillows in a darker coral shade emphasize the main color choice.
