With the Year of the Dog just around the corner (February 16, 2018, to be exact), most of us are looking for ways to subtly attract good luck into our homes. This could be done with the practice of Feng Shui, and applying the basic principles to renovating or maintaining your home.

But what if you are just looking for a new (or your first) home? Whether you are looking for a detached house, a townhouse, or condo unit, then you can get a head start on luck and look for a home with good energy (chi). According to this article from Feng Shui Beginner, one of the first things you should look for when house hunting is the home's floor plan. Ideally, you should choose a home with a floor plan that is square or rectangular, and not irregularly shaped.

This belief primarily stems from the Feng Shui concept of the "Bagua Map," which shows that there are specific sectors corresponding to various elements located in different parts of the house. According to the Bagua Map, a house must have nine sectors: Wealth and Prosperity (wood), Fame and Reputation (fire), Marriage and Relationships (earth), New Beginnings and Family (wood), Health (earth), Children and the Future (metal), Knowledge (earth), Career and Life Journey (water), and Travel and Helpful Friends (metal), with the last three sectors ideally being situated near the entrance of your home.

According to the article, an irregularly-shaped floor plan might cause some of these sectors to be "missed" or cut off in your home. Ever wonder why some developers sell irregularly-shaped units at lower prices? This might be the reason.

Another (non-Feng Shui-related) reason why you should opt for a regular-shaped floor plan: it's much easier to decorate and furnish!
