Staying High and Dry: This Student Competition Comes Up with Design Solutions for Calamities and Floods

The El Niño phenomenon that we are currently experiencing—along with sudden unseasonal typhoons and resulting floods—seem to be the “new normal” in our country. Instead of waiting for a disaster to happen, designers and homeowners should take a proactive role in creating residences and structures that could withstand any climate crisis.

This is the theme that the interior design student competition IDisenyo tackles this year. Kalamidad: Interior Design in Times of Calamity aims to increase awareness among design students on the impact of urban flooding, and to promote the role of interior design in addressing this issue. An exhibit, along with special activities such as design talks, will be held this week from January 11-16 at the Atrium Area of SM Marikina.

Here are the entries from this year's competition:

IDisenyo is an annual, nationwide, interior design student competition produced by the University of the Philippines Interior Design Alumni Association (UPIDAA). For more information, follow the UPIDAA Facebook page.

Check out the schedules of special talks and activities to be held at the IDisenyo exhibit from January 11 to 16 at SM Marikina:
