Shower Maintenance

Learn how to maintain your shower with these cleaning tips.

The convenience of a shower is one of the main reasons why it is highly preferred by homeowners who are always on the go. A shower takes up less space, it saves more water, and it is much easier to clean. When buying shower, keep in mind that there are specific maintenance requirements, as these can help you preserve its usage. Let these cleaning tips guide you.

Keep these tips in mind:

Daily Maintenance

Wipe the walls, from top to bottom, with a dry towel. Use a cleaner with a mild abrasive, or even use a homemade solution, if you are on a budget. A small squeegee is also useful, because it wipes away soap and water drops after every shower.

If you have problems with water spots, you may have hard water. Hard water reduces the effectiveness of detergents, because it is made from calcium and magnesium. The best way to work with hard water is to install a water conditioner. (Learn more about hard water here.)

Weekly Maintenance

Shower doors are usually filled with soap scum and dirt. Wipe down the glass doors with a damp cloth with white vinegar, then rinse thoroughly. Also, make sure to clean the shower door track with an old tooth brush and a few hints of baking soda. Do not use products with chlorine or ammonia because these ingredients might ruin your shower’s finish.

Monthly Maintenance

If you have tiled walls in your shower, it might require monthly cleaning, because the grout (sandy material in tiles) can easily cause mold or mildew. Use a soft-bristled brush with a mild dishwashing liquid, or a mix ½ cup vinegar with ½ cup baking soda, to make your tiles clean. Learn more about homemade solutions here.

Shower Curtain Maintenance

Keeping your shower curtain dry is essential. You don’t want mold and mildew to ruin it! Whether your curtain is made out of vinyl, synthetic, cotton or hemp liner, make sure you wash it every other week, with a mild cleaner and soap.

If your curtain does not recommend machine washing, use a soft-bristled brush and ½ cup baking soda to clean its outer and inner parts.
